AARP Senior Driver Safety Classes

by AARP of CROSSTOWN COMPANIONS ( 18-Jul-2012 )

Founded in 1979, the AARP Senior Driver Safety Program has helped millions of drivers stay safe on the road. Vehicles, traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads we travel everyday have changed radically since our present Seniors first started driving.  Some drivers over 50 have never looked back since they first got their licenses. The relaxed classroom setting is conducted by a mature volunteer instructor and open discussion is encouraged. There is NO DRIVING AND NO TESTS. Instruction includes a video and a work book. The course is held in two 4 hour classes. Participants will learn the rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate their vehicles with safety when they encounter an unfamiliar or threatening situation. Other topics include:

  • How to manage and accommodate vision and hearing changes and slowed reaction times.
  • How to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots
  • How to judge and maintain the proper following distance
  • The safest way to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections
  • The proper use of safety belts, airbags, anti lock brakes and sophisticated new technologies
  • Ways to monitor theirs and other’s driving skills and capabilities
  • The effects of medications and drug interactions on driving
  • Eliminating distractions inside the car like accommodating pets, food and cell phone use

After completing the course, participants have a heightened awareness of the challenges that driving presents and their responsibility to themselves, their loved ones, pedestrians and other drivers.

The course is not a traffic school for point reduction.  Attendance at all 8 hours is required for a certificate of completion. Discounts on car insurance can be granted to certificate holders.  Contact your agent for details.
