I began my journey of happiness when I went to my first music festival in Mac, Colorado, a teeny tiny town outside Grand Junction (way, way outside Grand Junction) for Country Jam. It was 95 degrees at 9am and there was not a tree in sight. The festival was held in a farmers field and that was all that was there, a field (and about 20,000 of my new friends) I knew I would “melt” if I didn’t have some shade for the next three days. At that time the only store, for miles around, only had an umbrella and some artificial flowers. I purchased these and with great zeal went to work sewing (yes, this was before my discovery of hot glue guns, the eight wonder of the world!) the flowers onto the umbrella for the original “Kim flare”. Although it provided shade, the umbrella was cumbersome, with trying to hold my camera, beverage, food, water balloon launcher, etc.; the balancing umbrella act was tedious.
The next year I became brilliant….a hat! Yes that was the solution. I needed a large hat to provide my own little oasis of shade in my new found favorite location, Planet Bluegrass. I had discovered the Telluride Bluegrass Festival…my home away from home for many years to come. I was in heaven or at least at 8750 foot altitude in Telluride, Colorado which brought me even closer to the sun. My first hat was born! I was an instant celebrity, at least in my own mind! I made friends left and right – everyone wanted to meet me and take pictures of me with my hat. I was given back stage passes, on site camping accommodations were bestowed upon me, I was presented with front row seats in the “pit” where I could lean on the stage and ogle the performers. The Festivarian Organizers requested that the Boom Chicks (every musician that plays at the festival, on stage at the same time) be allowed to wear my hats! Yes, oh yes- I had arrived in all my glory! I am the Queen of my World! I have returned to Telluride for over 10 years now. I have expanded my “reign” to Rocky Grass and the beautiful Florida beaches! I wear my hats for dancing, singing, fishing, camping, hiking, biking, boating, sun worshiping, and anything I can think of that involves breathing and enjoying myself!
With the help of Meg and Diana, I am so excited to have other enthusiasts, like yourself, who are anxious to join me in my pursuit and quest for fun. Bring on the happiness!
