Choosing the Right Hair Salon

Dying one’s hair can be traumatic for anyone—especially the first-timer who unfortunately experiences the every-dreaded fried hair. For anyone who has ever colored or highlighted his or her hair, you know that with every new color, there is a, hopefully slim, chance that your hair will end up cooked to well-done. As a result, choosing the right hair salon in Orange County is not always an easy task.

Sadly, I experienced this kind of trauma three months ago. I made an appointment with my usual hair stylist and looked forward to fresh roots. I showed up on time for my appointment, sat in my usual chair, and grabbed a magazine. I looked forward to new highlights and a clean cut. As my hair stylist began to foil my hair, we chatted as we always do. Everything seemed normal as she put me under the dryer until suddenly, things did not feel right. My hair began to feel very hot and the hair on the back of my head started to burn my scalp. I questioned how long my stylist was leaving me under the dryer, but I quickly reassured myself that I’d never had a problem before. I felt that I was in good hands and tried to calm my nerves. After a few more painful minutes, my stylist called me over to the rinsing station and took out all of my foils.

Something still did not feel right. As she washed my hair, the typical “Your hair looks great” did not come. In fact, she said nothing. Instead, she washed my hair in silence before taking me over to her station to dry and cut my hair. Upon arrival at the station, I looked into the mirror, a look of horror sweeping across my face. White. My hair was white. My hair had been fried.

I share my experience, not to scare away anyone who is carefully contemplating changing his or her hair color. I have changed my hair color many times and experienced bad haircuts in the past. But I share my story to encourage people to carefully read reviews before picking an Orange County Salon. Dying one’s hair can be traumatic, but it doesn’t have to be. Most salons are wonderful and most haircuts turn out fine. Today, there is even a growing industry for hair extensions in Orange County, and many hair stylists can even help guests with their extensions. But it is important to ask around and to read reviews before letting just anyone fix your hair.
