Cosmetic Physician Services: Option or Obsession

by Cham Johnston of Independent Medical & Aesthetic ( )
Cosmetic procedures and surgery have received loads of media scrutiny in the past few years.  Years ago, cosmetic physicians would restore body parts that were deformed from birth defects, surgery, or disease.  Today, thousands of people around the world are using cosmetic surgery as a beautification process.  Some popular areas that are associated with this type of surgical procedure include:·         Scar removal·         Noses jobs·         Face lifts and eye lift·         Breast enhancement / reduction / lift·         Tattoo Removal·         Hair Transplants·         Liposuction·         Skin Grafts for burn victims·         Buttock liftThe possibilities truly are endless when referring to cosmetic surgery.  In addition to the following lists, cancer patients often use this type of surgery to restore certain body parts that became distorted during chemotherapy.  Artificial limbs also fall into this particular medical category.Questions may arise when discussing the benefits and risks of cosmetic surgery.  Here are viewpoints from both sides of the argument: Benefits·         People will gain a huge lift in self-confidence and self-esteem from looking younger and thinner ·         Surgeries like liposuction and breast reduction greatly enhance the physical health of patients.  These particular procedures will allow the patient to become more active, which in turn will lead to an overall healthier lifestyle.·         Advances in modern technology have led to few side effects of cosmetic surgery, making it safer and more reliable.·         General physical and emotional changes can lead to a great quality of life for patients.Risks and Detriments·         If a patient is having a procedure done strictly for vanity purposes, the risks are heavy.  The surgeries often carry with it a danger of being unsuccessful, which will leave the patient worse than before.  In rare cases, death has occurred.  The risk of infection is very high during any cosmetic surgery.·         Bleeding is a common side effect.  Blood clotting under the skin can cause particular areas of skin to become discolored.·         Scars will often be left wherever an incision is made.

·         Nerve damage is also a definite possibility.  If the surgeon hits a nerve, the patient can lose feeling in certain body parts.

There is no right or wrong answer to whether or not people should go through with cosmetic surgery.  As mentioned, there are certain pros and cons.  However, the choice truly lies with each patient.  If a person wants to have a doctor use an aesthetic laser to help eliminate a scar, than there should be no one stopping them.
