Different Types of Scholarships

Each year, thousands of students graduate high school with hopes of being granted a scholarship to help them pay for college.  Scholarships can come from a wide variety of different places and are given based on numerous different criteria.

The following is a short list of the different types of scholarships available:

·         Academic scholarships: These are generally given based off of academic merit.  Students who have high grade point averages, scored very well on their SATs or ACTS, or excel in a specific subject may be granted an academic scholarship.  Often times, departments within school districts (i.e. Science department, Math department) will offer one student a scholarship each year for excelling in their particular field.

·         Leadership scholarships: Leadership scholarships are reserved for students who participate in many different student clubs and organizations.  For example, a student who is the president of his or her student government, an active member of the Key Club, and volunteers at a local homeless shelter will qualify for a leadership scholarship.

·         Need-Based Scholarship: These scholarships are given to students who lack the financial means to pay tuition.  Many different variables come into play when applying for a need-based scholarship, including household income, number of siblings, cost of living, etc.

·         Athletic Scholarship: Probably the most sought after of all, athletic scholarships are given to student-athletes who are looking to continue their pursuit of greatness in sports.  Universities will either offer student-athletes a "full ride," which means that the school will pay tuition for all four years, or a partial athletic scholarship.  Athletic scholarships are sometimes offered to athletes who walk-on to a team and show significant signs of improvement throughout their college-athletic career.

There truly are thousands of scholarships available.   Whether a student-athlete is looking for college athletic scholarships or a writer is looking at scholarships reserved for potential journalists, high school graduates should do their research in order to find one they might qualify for.
