Suggestions for Families whose loved ones suffer from Memory Loss or Dementia
Communication
You will not be able to change the mind of someone with Dementia by arguing. Instead,
acknowledge all requests or comments, even if irrational.
. Don’t fall into the trap of communicating only about negative issues. Praise good
behavior. Speak in a calm, caring and supportive way. Show affection often.
Maintaining Dignity
Dementia patients are sometimes unresponsive and distant. They need the human touch and
thrive on kindness, reassurance, and attention.
Make time to be with them and interact as one human being to another.
Managing Behavior
Recognize that aggressive and compulsive behavior tends to increase with the
progression of the disease. No one is at fault. It is simply a manifestation of the
disease.
. Stay calm; the safety of the patient should be top priority.
. Be patient, flexible, and be creative.
Staying Positive
Caring for a family member can be an opportunity to be involved with your loved one and
make a positive impact on their life.
Look for ways to enjoy being together. Spend time outdoors. Take walks. Go to the park.
Simple activities can be meaningful for everyone.
Managing the Environment
The same steps used to “child-proof” a home can be helpful to ensure safety.
Avoid surprises. Remind the dementia patient about upcoming events, even routine things
like meals, visits, and bedtime.
Create a routine. Persons with Dementia prefer a predictable environment
Involving the Family
Children have the ability to delight an older person with their presence. Encourage
children to interact with the senior family member.
Encourage all family members to treat seniors as part of the family.
Look for opportunities for social contact and fun.
Getting Help
. Caring for a senior is tiring and stressful. Consider hiring a professional for respite
care to facilitate a vacation or just a day off. Caregiving is challenging and affecting.
Avoid stress and burden by getting some rest.
. When you can’t handle it alone any more, seek professional help. Care On Call can
provide part time or continuous care for your loved one when you need it.
