Looking for a dentist in Redmond may be a little more difficult that it seems. All dentists are the same, right? Wrong. Dentists are like medical doctors; some specialize in certain areas, or cater to specific age groups. Pediatricians are different from internal medicine doctors, who are different from orthopedists, and so on. Finding the right one is imperative to your health, and your personal medical experience.

Types of Dentists

There are nine official areas of specialty recognized by the American Dental Association, and many other unofficial specialties. For example some practices specialize in dental anesthesiology, or special needs dentistry, which are ‘unofficial’ specialization areas. One of the official recognized areas of specialty is orthodontics. These doctors must go to extra schooling, and specialize in the jaw and bite patterns. Their main focus is to correct irregular or unhealthy bite structures, usually using braces and retainers. Another of the specialization categories is endodontic or root canal therapy. Oral surgery and pediatric dentistry are other examples of area emphasis. One area of specialization, which is becoming increasingly popular, is cosmetic dentistry. While you can still get regular procedures done, the focus is on creating a beautiful and perfect smile. The emphasis is placed on form, not necessarily function. Whitening, veneers, and other cosmetic procedures are emphasized in this area. It is important to note however, that the American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal area of specialty, meaning no extra schooling was necessary.

Choose a Family Dentist First

The most common or well-known type is the “family dentist.” These practices focus on the basic dental needs, emphasizing oral health. Most of these practices will accept patients of all ages. They usually employ hygienists who are specially trained to clean teeth and gums and perform regular checkups. These dentists perform the long list of the procedures that are necessary for the average person, including fillings, extractions, and root canals. The nice thing about finding a family practice first, is that they have connections in the field. If a practice is worth going to, they have a list of specialists they work with. Part of their job is to refer their patients to specialists when they have needs that exceed the dentist’s comfort zone or area of expertise.

Pick a Good Match

Insurance is a big issue with medical issues in general. Just like certain doctors, not all dentists take every insurance plan, and so it’s helpful to know the company and the benefits available with the specific plan. Finding a practice that will answer questions and work with you is just as important as their academic qualifications. Looking for a dentist in Redmond who fits your family’s needs and your insurance plan can be a daunting task. Finding a good dentist in your neighborhood is made easier with the multiple resources online. Once you have your trustworthy family practice dentist, they can help lead you through the ins and outs of the dental industry.
