HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL SINGER Having a great voice is one part of the links that make up part of the chain required to become a successful singer. What are the steps to getting a contract with a record company? Song writing, vocal lessons, learning how to market yourself, and having the determination to pursue worthwhile dreams are additional links to the puzzle! Follow the steps listed below to fulfill your dream of becoming a famous singer. 1. Expand Vocal Talent. Find ways to enhance your talent including private or group vocal instruction, improve performance skills, develop image and style, and get your face out there. These are some of the things that might make an impact on your singing career and your chance of being signed by a record company. A record company looks not only for a voice it can sell to the public, but an image the public will either be able to relate to or will find entertaining. 2. Promote Yourself. Start by creating a blog. Go to blogspot.com and begin marketing your singing abilities. Also try websites like Youtube and Myspace which allow you to showcase your music globally and build a fan base locally-internationally. Myspace now has its own record label and actively signs performers who showcase music on its site. Many on Myspace have been discovered by first publishing your first song on the Internet. You can gain over 4 million viewers, which can prompt record labels to seek you out and sign you. You can also try selling your music on itunes.com.The Internet is a fantastic way to attract audience viewers that might encourage and help you land a record deal. 3. Record a Professional Demo. Use a professional recording studio or find someone who has a home recording setup. Record between three and six of your best songs and burn copies of the disc. Your demo is your calling card when you look for an agent or approach a record label. In some cases, a good media package may be the only chance you get to showcase yourself. Include a short biography, an 8x10 head shot of you and/ or your band. You may include a DVD of concerts, vocal performances, theatrical experience, music videos, or even a home-shot video allowing an agent to get to know your personality. 4. Get a Talent Agent or Manager. An agent that has been in the business and knows her/his way around can get you heard by the people who have the power to sign you. Use an online music industry contact database to find a manager or music producer to hear your media package (see Resources). You can also check the credits on CDs by your favorite performers to see who manages or produces them. 5. Believe in Yourself. In the entertainment industry, it?s the determined and persistent people that succeed. Believe you can do what you want to because with effort and determination you can do whatever you put your mind to. Never give up. Set personal goals- and stick to them! Sometimes you may feel that it?s hard to stick with it, but it can be done just keep trying and keep working. If you really want to do it, you will. Timing is another element to a successful career, so be patient. You can't fail unless you quit. If you believe in your talent and continue to try, there is always a chance that someone will recognize you and offer you the contract that could lead to the singing career you want. Obstacles are right and are natural and exist to be overcome (by you). Engage with them consciously and with as positive an attitude, never hesitating, looking to the future!
