Those who know how to make a bed properly with traditional western bedding are those who can be truly proud to host guests in their own home. Some people have never stopped to ponder the possibility that beds can be made up incorrectly. The fact of the matter is that those who have never learned to properly make up a bed can end up embarrassed when company comes and everything is not just right. The steps for making a bed properly are listed throughout this article.

The first step to traditional bedding is the mattress cover. This is usually white and not meant to look decorative; although, it can be. The sole purpose of this component is to protect the mattress from potential spills, accidents and all sorts of possible bodily fluids that may end up on it. Since a mattress can’t be washed, it’s a good idea to use a mattress cover to protect it that can be pulled off and washed.

The next step is the bottom sheet. In a sheet set, there is always a top sheet and a bottom sheet. The difference is told by the way the borders are gathered or hemmed on the sheet itself. A bottom sheet is gathered with elastic on the corners so that it will fit snugly around the mattress. This helps it to not slip off the bed while one is sleeping. This helps to protect the mattress cover, provide comfort and catch the small things that can end up on sheets. It should be tucked under each of the four corners of the bed before moving onto the next step.

After the bottom sheet is put on, it’s time for the top sheet. Many people think the pattern should be right side up; however that is incorrect. The right side, or the side with the pattern, should be face down. The reason for this is that when someone gets into the bed and pulls down the covers, they only see the side that faces down since the blanket will be on the top of it. This makes the bed look homier and is indeed the reason it should be done this way.

Of course, the last step is to add the comforter, quilt or other blanket on top. This should be spread out evenly so as to avoid any bumps. It should also cover both sheets in their entirety. Some people like to cover the pillows completely with the top blanket while others prefer to pull one side down to expose the sheets. Both methods are fine and as long as this is done, the bed should be made properly.
