How to Mount a TV

Modern technology has made the picture on televisions clearer than ever.  As competition continues to rise and older tube TV's are slowly being swept away, flat screen televisions are now cheaper than ever.

Once the decision is made to buy a flat screen, customers must then decide where to put the television in order to maximize the viewing area.  Wall mounts have now become the primary choice for flat screen TV owners.  Not only do wall mounts prevent the TV from taking up space in a living room or bedroom, but fastening it to the wall creates a modern look that allows the screen to be seen from relatively far away distances.

People will often bring in a professional to mount their flat screen, but it actually is a job that can be done by anyone with a drill and a level.

·         To begin, choose a location on the wall where you plan on mounting the TV.  Be sure to choose an area that will make viewing the TV easy.  An area too high or too low will cause viewers to strain their necks.

·         Locate the studs in the wall. (Studs are usually 16 inches apart.) This will be where the mount will be fastened to the wall.  Screwing the mount into the wall and not the studs will almost guarantee that the television will fall to the ground when it's hung on the mount.

·         There are usually two parts to a mount, the wall mount and the television mount.  The television mount should be fastened to the back of the TV.  Most flat screens come equipped with areas to screw the mount to so that it sits level against the back of the television.  When fastening the wall mount to the wall, be sure to use a level before screwing in the screws.  The slightest bit of unevenness will skew the TV's view-ability.  (All television mounts come will the proper screws and washers for both the TV mount and the wall mount.)

·         Once both mounts are in place, cautiously hang the TV from the wall, making sure that it is totally secure before letting go.  This usually requires two people on opposite ends of the TV.

There are quite a few different types of television mounts.  Some are made to sit flat, others tilt, and some swivel.  You can even purchase an RV TV mount to ensure that you don't miss your favorite shows while on the road.  Yet, no matter which TV wall mount you decide on, be sure that it is properly installed so that the TV stays firmly in place.
