Knowing CPR can make a difference!!

A recent Newsday (Long Island, NY) newspaper article highlighted the concerns that the regional pre-hospital cardiac arrrest save rates are dismally low.  While nationwide ambulance response times continue to be less then 10 minutes, it appears that the length of time of the event to CPR being initiated is leading to a higher-then-average mortality rate. This appears to be a direct link to the sad fact that not enough people have received CPR and/or Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.

In cities like Seattle and Boston, pre-hospital cardiac arrest save rates run near 20%.  In other metropolitan areas, that number can be as low as 3%. It's these numbers that lead us to ask why? Why haven't more people expressed a desire to learn CPR? We know it makes a difference.  The new 2010 American Heart Association CPR Guidelines all but eliminate the concerns for disease transmission. So why aren't more people getting off the couch and coming out to learn a skill that could one day save someone's life? With as little as 3 hours of training, you can learn how to recognize the signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), how to use an AED, and maybe save someone's life.
