OSHA 1926 Subpart L - Scaffolds Test Set 1926 L-2 is about using and reading OSHA as the examples that follow reveal.

Go to OSHA Part 1926 Subpart L - Scaffolds then read § 1925.450  follow this with 1926.450(a) Scope and application. When the reading of § 1926.450 is completed go to - § 1926.450 (b) Definitions. Note the word Definitions is presented in italics as Definitions. This is generally an announcement by an author or a publisher the following information is important to that specific section.

It is suggested that with a bright yellow highlighter pen read and highlight (if highlighting and underlining is allowed in your textbook the key words from Definitions. A word of caution to our students: The purpose of underlining or highlighting is to identify key words, sentences, or paragraphs as in definitions above.  This is to enhance the basic study and research and not to paint an entire page of text with blazing multiple colors that detract from the intent of careful research. It is in addition suggested that the student locate underline or highlight the following key words (definitions) in your OSHA textbook.

Definitions, Adjustable suspension scaffolds,  Bearer  (putlog), Boatswains' chair, Body belt, (safety belt), Body Harness, Brace, Bricklayers' square scaffold,  Carpenters' bracket scaffold, Catenary scaffold, Chimney Hoist, Cleat, Competent person, Continuous run scaffold, (Run scaffold), Coupler, Crawling board (Chicken ladder) Deceleration device, Double pole (independent pole) scaffold, Equivalent, Exposed power lines, Eye or Eye splice, Fabricated decking and planking, Fabricated frame scaffold (tubular welded frame scaffold), Failure, Float (ship) scaffold, Form scaffold, Guardrail system, Hoist, Horse scaffold,  then complete the remainder of the definitions on your own. When this work assignment is completed notice how the careful highlighting of the key words allows the words to stand out to the eye.

This is an important factor when taking a Timed, Open Book Examination. Follow the instructions and always use the OSHA alpha-numeric system when conducting advanced textbook research. Also, note the important alphabetic progression of all technical documents and publications.

Following the OSHA standard system read sections § 1926.451 (a) (1) identifies Capacity, 1926.451(2) Direct connections, (3) Suspension rope, (4) Each suspension rope,  Follow this with information from the number (5) The Stall load the into § 1926.451(b) Scaffold platform construction. Continue reading and highlight § 1926.451(b)(i). Then read and highlight § 1926.451(c) and (d) and (e) Access. Note the important information provided in § 1926.451(e)(3) Stairway-type ladders shall: Read and research the information relating to handrails, ladders, steps, treads, types of wood used for rungs including all dimensions. Read Appendix A of Subpart L. A good starting point for research is the Index to Appendix A for Subpart L which follows § 1926.454 Training requirements.

Appendix A to Subpart L contains a wealth of information about types of woods, strength of scaffold planks (in (z) but do not overlook Appendix A (k) ladder jack scaffolds or (p) (3) Ladder Type platforms, it's all about the hard woods like spruce, oak, ash, hickory, ladder rungs, stringers, diameters, mortised tendons of 7/8 inch diameter. This is the type of information instructors and professors generally include for test reviews. JD
