Private Guitar Lessons - The Importance of Practice

by Michael Levin from VistaNetMusic of VistaNetMusic ( 20-Sep-2012 )

Two of our most frequently asked questions at VistaNetMusic are a) "How long will it take to get results?" and b) "How often should I practice?". The answers are inter-related. Like most things in life, you truly get what you give, provided you have the right direction from a qualified music instructor.

To get your money's worth, the minimum practice time should be at least five days per week, twenty minutes a day. I highly recomend you build it up to thirty minutes per day. Students who practice more than an hour a day show tremendous results.

Whether it's Kid's Guitar Lessons, Online Drum Lessons, or any other instruction, practice is even more important than the lesson itself. A student or parent needs to understand this when making the decision to take lessons. I don't get mad or harsh with a student when they show up un-prepared. I prefere a more encouraging approach. We can still make some progress with little to no practice, but I'll mention the fact that increasing the effort at home will equal more fun and fullfillment on the instrument.
