The Benefits of Stone

Mankind has been using stone, well since the Stone Age. In the Stone Age stones served many purposes, from the chief sources of building materials for their homes to the weapons and tools they used on a daily basis. Since those primitive times stones uses have changed as new or other material have become available.

The Home

The old saying goes that the man’s home is his castle or something to that effect. Which is more true over the last few thousand years. As many walls of people’s homes, whether rich or poor have been made of thick stone walls. The size and scope of your home is dependant on either time or money or both. The castles and palaces made of stone from around the world cost a lot of money to build. Today there are very few castles and palaces built, but stone is still found in the home. The stones don’t necessarily hold up the walls, but have become more decorative. They have become parts of the walls as decortive stone on the outside of your house or the surround on your fireplace. Perhaps even the flooring in different rooms in your house.

Where do they get it?

Everyone knows where stone comes from in general and it is almost everywhere. From the rocks we find on the ground to the mountain ranges through out the world, rocks are found almost everywhere. But you will not find every type of stone in the same places. It is rare to find granite formations next to a marble. Or sand stone next to limestone. Even then no two marbles from different parts of the world will be the same.

How are you using it?

Depending on what kind of stone you are looking for and what you plan to do with will determine the cost and availability. As previously stated, not every stone is found everywhere. So Italian marble or Brazilian granite has to be imported. If they have stopped importing it, this will affect the cost and availability. Different stones are used for different things. An example of this would be the type of stone in the kitchen. You may not want to use travertine as a counter top because it stains easy, so granite would be a better choice.
