Theme Decorating

With company coming for a visit, it might be time to re- decorate your guest bedroom. Sometimes this is the last room in the house you tackle. More often than not, it's become the "junk" room! Maybe the kids are out of the house now and you finally have an extra room just for guests. Maybe that exercise room never got used, so you want to change it's function. This is one room you can really have fun with.. Choose a theme and GO WITH IT!.... Don't buy anything that doesn't fit into that theme. Here's the way I decorated my guest room "on a budget".

Living on a lake, the 2nd floor view from this guest room was beautiful. I wanted it to be bright, airy & comfortable. I started by painting the room a soft yellow. I choose a beach theme. A bed in a bag with soft blues & yellows worked perfect. I painted the brown headboard and an old desk chair a bright white enamel. Using a coordinating fabric found on the $1.00 a yard table, I made a gathered skirt for the table and attached it with velcro. I glued the fabric to the top of the table and added a piece of glass to the top, making a desk. Accessories included 3 white wood enamel frames of beach prints to hang over the bed, yellow flowers in a glass vase, white wood frames for photos, yellow throw pillows and a soft blue shag area rug. A few other beach accessories for the walls completed the room.

Every decision you make needs to fall into one of the categories of color (blue, yellow & white) theme (beach) or, decor scheme (light & airy). A dark wood frame piece of artwork wouldn't work as well in this room. Red flowers would be too heavy and dark. Take samples of paint & bedding with you when shopping for accessories to be sure you stay in the right color value.

If you have a plan, it will easier to make choices when shopping. Try and use what you have and just add to it. It's not necessary to buy everything new when re- decorating a room. You CAN do it!
