Time To Homestead

by Susan Bagwell of 4 States Youth Ranch NonProfit ( 14-Sep-2009 )
There will never be a better time to Homestead than right now.  Homesteading is wonderful because, it can be done anytime anywhere!!  Instead of waiting for the perfect moment in time to be placed on the perfect homesteading spot,  with the perfect garden, get busy where you are. It doesn't matter if you live in an apartment complex innercity, or in a rental home in a small town, there is always something  that can be grown as an on-going food supply.  Apartment dwellers are having great success with hydroponic growing.  Tomatos picked fresh from the vine are at the top of the list.  Anti-oxident rich and full of vitamin C also a red fruit/vegetable good  for the prostrate and other things.  Squash, lettuce and many other vegetables grow well inside.  Rental homes in small towns usually don't have very large yards, but that is alright because only a small space is needed.  A few 10' strips broken up will suffice.  The lawn can be left in place between the rows and mowed as usual.  Tomatoes, peppers, squash and many other vegetables can be grown for your use and pleasure. There is a great deal of enjoyment involved in growing plants and watching vegetables mature.  Eating the fruits of your labor is the best part.  It is as if the body says, "This is Wonderful, Why Have You Kept This From Me".   Such total satisfaction difficult to acheive on any other level gives the old ego a boost of knowing that your efforts and tender loving care brought these practically free vegetables to the table. The cost of purchasing vegetables at the market is quite expensive.  A great portion of the expense comes from the product becoming freight that gets transported across country wheather by train or tractor-trailer.  Let's not mention how many different people have their hands on the vegetables you plan to purchase and eat.   As fuel becomes more expensive and less gets transported, homesteading will become all the rage. It doesn't matter what the season is, there is always a variety of vegetables that can be planted throughout the  year.  Lists and growing instructions are available online free for anyone.  Get Your Start Today!!
