Tammy Caspersen was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma and currently resides in Pensacola, Florida with her husband Neal and their companion Chief. She has always done some sort of art since she was a child and feels like she has finally found her passion in pottery. She considers herself a whimsical potter making all realms of pottery including functional pieces, Raku, woodfired pottery, and sculpture work. She has studied under two master potters for the past 4 years Larry Manning and Bill Clover to include Master of Arts instructor Karen Zimmerman. Tammy shows her pottery in the local art shows and has won awards locally and has exhibited artwork at Quayside Gallery in Pensacola and at the Navarre Healing Arts Center, Navarre, FL.From raw clay to finished product she follows the steps that have been established over the centuries by potters on every continent. Every piece of pottery she makes is hand crafted. Tammy does all the wheel throwing on an electric potter's wheel and all the slab pottery is built by hand. The only moulding she does is some slump moulding of platters, and even then each is made from a slab rolled on the slab roller or by hand and sculpted before being draped over a form. All of Tammy?s pottery is high fired pottery. Each piece takes roughly two weeks to make and is fired once in an electric kiln at 1700 degrees and secondly in a gas kiln after it has been glazed going to temperatures of about 2,060 degrees. All of her pieces are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and even oven safe. Tammy is a volunteer at the local Pensacola Junior College in the Arts Department loading kilns for the college students and helping to promote the arts in Pensacola. Tammy makes functional art pieces from bowls, platters, coffee mugs, mustache mugs, wine glasses, vases, soap dispensers, sconces, wall art, raku, sculpture, silhouettes, to include wood fired pieces. All of her pottery is fired in electric kilns, gas kilns, raku kilns, and wood fired kilns. Tammy uses a lot of sea life for her backgrounds such as incorporating shells, sea shells, starfish, dolphin, crabs, sea turtles, fish, mermaids, and also dragonfly, butterfly, frogs, horses, Indians, the end of the trail, buffalo, sea life, salt water fish, fresh water fish, and several other things you would find in nature on her pieces such as leaves, bamboo and much more.
