How to Order Successfully at French Restaurants

There is something unique about French cuisine. It is foreign, yet very inviting. Many Virginians love dining at Charlottesville restaurants where French delicacies are being served.  The ambience is amazing, and the food is out of this world. Add a superb wine and the evening will be unforgettable for you and your guests.

Ordering from a French menu is not difficult when you are familiar with a few simple tricks. The more you know about the ordering process, and the courses served at these specialized dinners, the more you will enjoy the experience.

·         A little research will go a long way when having brunch, lunch or dinner at a French restaurant in Virginia. Chefs often write blogs about their creations. They also post information on their website.  Read all the details before you make reservations for your special night out.

·         It is always a good idea to learn a few native words when going to a restaurant where French dishes are served. For instance, “a la carte” means “from the menu” and “plat du jour” corresponds with “dish of the day.”

·         Do not panic, but request an explanation from the maître d' or waitress when expressions or ingredients on the menu are confusing. Believe it! You are not the first one asking for clarification.

·         Visit French restaurants in Richmond that offer menus with an English explanation.  A “poulet Française” is a battered chicken with lemon sauce, and a “Salade de Chèvre” consists of warm goat cheese, figs, and honey in a phyllo purse, served over a mixed green salad.

·         Be prepared to drink a glass of wine. Aside from brie cheese, baguettes and Crème Brulee, French people also enjoy red Chateau de Gaudou, white Pinot Grigio, or Chateaud’Aqueria rosé. If you are celebrating a special occasion, do not forget to order a bottle of Louis Roederer for your table. Studying a few wines before heading toward French Charlottesville restaurants will definitely make you look smart.  You can also check the wine list posted on the eatery’s website.

·         Do not pass up dessert. “Tarte au citron” or lemon tart with crème Anglaise is very refreshing after a delicious banquet. Order a coffee, espresso or cappuccino. Keep in mind that French citizens are famous for taking their time when enjoying a fine, multi-course meal.

·         End the evening with a few after-dinner drinks. Sit back and enjoy a flavorful sherry, port or Madeira. You can also order a liqueur or a dessert wine.
