Ink & Toner Cartridge Facts

Virtually every household and every office has a printer; however, most people do not properly maintain their printer to insure quality and a long life span. In the following article I will inform you about manufacturer tricks, printer maintenance, and tips to maintain your ink and toner cartridges.

So what is it that original manufacturers don’t want you to know? Let’s start at the beginning. Original manufacturers sell their printers, copy machines, and faxes at low margins because they expect to make large profits on the required ink and toner cartridges. Often printer cartridges are not fully filled with ink when you purchase them from the original manufacturer – forcing you to buy more when they run out. In fact, the cartridges that come in the box with the printer have very little ink in them to force you to buy new cartridges almost immediately. Value packs containing black and color cartridges are also lower in ink capacity so you really are not saving money when you purchase them. Original manufacturers would lead you to believe that after market cartridges will not work in your printer or that they will void your warranty, this is simply not true. Many re-manufacturers fill their cartridges to maximum capacity with professional quality ink, sometimes doubling the pages you can print.

Maintenance on your printer is very important. Just as driving a car requires more than simply adding gas. The most important, and easiest, thing you can do is to clean your print heads. This is done in the tools menu on your printer. This will keep your cartridges from clogging and will allow you to sustain print quality. I recommend doing this with every cartridge change or when text appears blurry and faded. In the same tools menu you can also align your cartridges.

Use the following tips to get the maximum out of your cartridges.

·         Set your printer default to print in black ink only. Cartridges leak color, even when a document is void of color, when this is not the default setting. This is another trick by the original manufacturers to cause ink to run out faster.

·         Set your printer default to print in economy mode to save ink. You can change the setting under printer properties on a needed basis when printing a document you need in high quality.

·         Store cartridges upright in a dark place. Light can cause ink to evaporate.

·         Store cartridges at room temperature.
