The first step of starting a drywall project is to ensure you have all the materials and supplies needed. Supplies and materials should be purchased based on the amount needed. Calculate this by determining the total square footage of the room plus ten percent to allow for waste. Divide this total by thirty to in order to use 4’ x 8’ drywall sheets, and round up to the closest number. You will then need joint tape, joint compound, screws and nails. For each 1,000 square feet purchase 370 feet of joint tape, 140 pounds of joint compound, 700 screws and 700 nails. This will provide all the supplies and materials needed to complete your project.
Always store your sheetrock/Drywall flat to prevent damage on the edges.
Then, to make attachment quicker, snap a chalk line on each sheet to indicate the joists (this will help when screwing your screws to the joists) or stud centers underneath. Always start your screws in the center of the board and work out from there. Ceilings can be tougher, especially if you don't have much help. But braces can almost do the work of one person. You can make your braces, just measure the exact height from floor to the ceiling then subtract the width of your drywall. Cut two-by-fours to that length and use them to help hold the drywall in place while you fasten the screws.
Next, you will need joint compound, tape and a 4 in knife. Place joint compound on all the joints, then place tape over top the joint compound, (also put joint compound over the screw heads) then put another coat of joint compound. Make sure you scrap the seams and screw head 2-4 times to get all the bubbles out from under the tape. Otherwise you will have to strip out the tape and start all over again. Let it dry for 24 hours and place a skim coat over all the joints and screw heads again. Let dry.
Next, you are ready for sanding and painting.
