The Benefits of Funding for Scientific Research

There is no doubt that science has helped us combat diseases and live longer.  There used to be a time when doctors had no clue about how to help their patients and would resort to superstitious methods or even do crazy things like bleed their patients.  Luckily, with the advent of the microscope, knowledge of the cell, and other vital information about health, doctors and experts can underpin the causes of sicknesses and even come up with cures for them.  Child and adult mortality has decreased significantly, vaccines have been perfected, and people now have a more general and correct knowledge of what to do to keep themselves healthy.  Health and wellness keeps improving more and more.

Even with all these advancements, there is still work to be done to enhance the quality of health care and the prevention of illnesses.  Some diseases, such as AIDS and cancer, remain incurable, and treatments can only keep the patients at bay before tragedy strikes.  One statistic says that in the US and Canada, cancer can cut off one fourth of a person’s life.  Other diseases are curable, but due to heredity and poor diet and exercise plans, they can definitely be a threat to a person’s life.  Cardiovascular disease can also cut the lifespan by 25% in the countries of US and Canada.  And these are the fortunate countries who invest a lot of time and money in researching health epidemiology.  Many third world countries do not have as much knowledge about general health and their citizens may not be able to afford vaccines and medications.  There is definitely something that needs to be done to improve the lives of people from all over the world suffering from illness.

In order to research combating sickness and preventing disease, there needs to be funding for scientific research.  Funding can come from government grants, private companies focusing on scientific advancement, non-profit organizations, and donations from large businesses or individual people.  This money can create and fund medical research services that are specifically for investigating more about health and disease prevention.  Infectious disease experts from the top of the field would have the money and the resources to fully explore and examine causes, symptoms, and possible medication for critical illnesses.  They might also be able to find a way to make vaccines and medicines more affordable to the public as well as countries where there are many poor people.

Good things can only come from funding for scientific research.  The main thing scientific exploration costs is money, and a large investment in something very important is well worth it.  After all, if you or a loved one were suffering from a critical illness, you would be grateful to know there are top notch scientists looking into the best, most affordable treatments.  Science will continue to help us if we work at it and give it the time, attention, and perhaps most importantly, funding, for these life-threatening illnesses.
