The Never Ending Pet Debate

by Art Gibb, freelance writer on behalf of Ballyhara ( 14-Mar-2012 )

People have argued for years over which pet was the better choice between dogs or cats. There really is a simple way to find out. What type of animal is considered to be man's best friend? The dog, of course! My husband has always preferred cats to dogs, but I would rather have a dog for a pet. I am very allergic to cats and my husband is mildly allergic to dogs so I never thought that we would ever own either as a pet, but things began to change for my husband last year.

My brother asked if we would puppy sit for him while he and his family went on a vacation. I was reluctant at first because we were just adjusting to a new house and I didn’t want to ruin it with puppy accidents and smells. Their dog was a Maltipoo, half Maltese and half Poodle, and he was active and cuddly. To my surprise, my husband really grew to enjoy having the extra pet in the house. He even commented that if we decided to get a family dog eventually, then he would prefer a larger dog. That was a start I guess.

After the birth of our son, I was surprised to hear my husband talking about getting a dog for a family Christmas present! I never would have expected my husband to say that he wanted us to get a dog before we even had a cat. This is when we started thinking about which dog breed would be best for our family.

My dilemma was how to find a dog that will be a good match for our needs. Everyone has certain preferences when it comes to dog attributes. There are so many dog breeds that there is a good match for everyone. I made a list of what we want and then went to the internet to start searching. We have a yard, but it isn't large so we'd like a dog that could be happy with a little space to run and explore. We also would like to have a dog that is friendly with children since we have a young child already. Due to my husband’s allergies, I would also prefer a dog that doesn’t shed much. After spending some time scanning the internet for dog temperaments, I saw Cavachon puppies for sale. I think all puppies are cute, no matter what breed of dog it is, but these puppies were adorable. I know that we have some serious work ahead of us because now that my husband has agreed to buy a dog, we both have to agree on the same breed!
