The days of cheap energy ended long ago, yet many energy-hogging systems that we grew so accustomed to remain in place. Designed to serve well at the time and under the conditions that existed, they no longer meet the needs for energy efficiency to reduce wasteful usage. The largest of these systems in our homes include our central air conditioning systems with much of the cost of cooling our homes in the summer wasted in a variety of ways. Inefficient windows and doors allow for excessive heat gain, energy is lost through the extensive ductwork system in the home, and energy is wasted by cooling areas that are unoccupied.
Improved energy efficient central air conditioning systems today have reduced the waste significantly and allow for much greater control over the home HVAC systems, even by remote access from locations anywhere in the world. The installation of a new energy efficient unit can result in great savings in the electric bill over time as well as offer a more comfortable environment and improved air quality. But central air conditioning isn’t the only option available today to keep your home climate comfortable. Another approach that is growing in popularity is ductless air conditioning, or a split unit AC.
Ductless air conditioning utilizes an air blower that hangs discretely on the wall. It is connected directly to a compressor that sits outside with an insulated refrigerant line that supplies the chilled air to the inside blower. These systems can serve from one room alone to up to four areas from a single outside compressor. This allows for complete control over the areas that are cooled at any given time, such as bedrooms only at night and the general living area only when occupied. This feature alone can save hundreds of dollars a month in energy without compromise to comfort.
With central air conditioning, cold air must travel through extensive ducts to reach its destination. As it travels, heat is transferred making the air conditioner work harder and use more energy. In a split unit ductless air conditioner, there are no ducts required. There is only a well insulated refrigerant line for negligible heat loss. Additionally, central air conditioning ductwork is a source for bacterial growth and allergens so a ductless system is also a healthier one.
If you are looking to cut energy usage and costs in your home without compromising comfort in the summer heat, consider all of your options including a ductless air conditioning system.
