I come from a family of five kids. If the sheer size of my family wasn’t enough to scare some people away, it also gets crazier. My parents decided to name all of their children with names that begin with “H-a.” And if that was not enough, four of the five kids in our family have birthdays in the same week during August. When August rolls around each year, my family prepares for a week full of birthday fun. And with color sprinkles, cookie cakes, pool parties and more, fun it is for an entire week year after year. With so much birthday experience in my household, there are certain aspects of the birthday season that I look forward to each year.
First, every year I look forward to the time I get to spend with my family. Birthdays are a wonderful time to host parties and to spend time with family. People get to take time out of their busy schedules to sit down and enjoy an evening with family, in honor of the birthday boy or girl. And in my family, this event happens four times in one week every year. As my siblings and I get older, we still pick a fun activity for our family to do, a birthday treat we want to celebrate with, and a delicious dinner that we either order from a restaurant or that my mom makes for us. Birthday celebrations are so special with family.
Another wonderful aspect of birthdays are the delicious treats. From color sprinkles to sprinkle candy, cakes are so much fun to make and to eat. My favorite birthday treat is chocolate chip cookie cake with delicious fluffy icing on top. I look forward to this scrumptious treat every year. But with a family that has four children with birthdays in the same week, there are a lot of treats each August birthday week. For my sister, iced sugar cookies are the best. My brother enjoys apple dumplings, and my other brother loves cupcakes. Edible sprinkles for cakes make a wonderful, fancy addition to any cupcakes or birthday cake.
And finally, a fun part of birthday weeks—perhaps the best part—is the anticipation of it. Obviously, birthdays are a lot less fun after they are over. But each year, I look forward to our family August birthday week. Even after it is over, I am thinking about the next year’s birthday week. With family, cakes, color sprinkles and lots of laughs, birthday week creates memories to last forever.
