When choosing an Interior Designer, here are some things to look for:
1. Always interview the designer first. They should be interested in what you like, and how you use the space and what feeling you are trying to acheive. This is your home, and it should reflect you, not the designer. They should be asking questions like: do you have children or animals, how often do you use this room, and are their any colors or shapes that they need to avoid.
2. Ask for references of former clients and what type of projects they have completed. If using a designer that a friend or family member has used, they probably have a trusted relationship with that person. Ask them questions about their experience, and if they were satisfied with the outcome. You may even ask to see the finished product.
3. If the designer presents an idea that you are uncomfortable with, or doesn't seem sure about an idea you have, be sure they validate why it isn't a good idea, and why you should do plan B instead. I good designer will explain why they feel strongly about something.
4. Be sure that you "click" with the designer. Decorating your office or home can be a very personal experience, so if you don't feel completely comfortable with this person, they may not be the one for you.
Good luck!
