Fight Drive

by Tim Harris of Rug-ged Retriever Training ( 13-Apr-2012 )

Fight Drive is defined as the desire a dog has to evaluate himself against an opponent.  Don't confuse Fight Drive with aggression.  Aggression is an unwanted vicious behavior.  Fight Drive is NOT aggression and is NOT a vicious behavior.  It is merely the desire to fight on behalf of the pack leader.  Fight Drive is more suited to service dogs in the areas of protection training, some police dog work, etc.  It is not a drive that we consider desirable in a good hunting companion.  A dog with high Fight Drive is much more than the average bird hunter / dog owner can handle.

Tomorrow:  Flight / Survival Drive
