Kindergarten to College: It’s Okay to Ask for Help!

by Dr. Alan F. Hill of Student Advocacy & Mediation Services, LLC ( 25-Sep-2012 )

Every child deserves the best opportunities to succeed in school.  Today’s world is far different from the one of our youth or our parents. Today, a successful education is one of the most important keys to the success of your child.

Sometimes the road from kindergarten to college is a straight line, but in most families there are detours, unexpected events including health and family issues beyond your child’s control that impact their education. Further, parents, being a child’s first and most important teacher, often find themselves overwhelmed with concerns, confusion and anxiety when they send their child off to school. Aside from your parents or guardians, chances are you, like most of us, never had any formal training on how to be a parent. We all learned parenting by doing it.  Sometimes, each of us needs a little help along the way when it comes to parenting.

Asking for help in parenting is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions that a parent makes. Who do I call? Who should I trust?  Clearly, family and friends will willingly give you their opinions and suggestions. Often times, their suggestions are not what you are looking for. When situations arise in which you find that your child and their education are suffering or it appears they are having behavioral or academic problems who do contact?  Hopefully, Student Advocacy and Mediation Services (SAMS), LLC.  We are staffed with certified public educators who have worked in public education for over 30 years with diverse experience as classroom teachers, school administrators and administrative due process hearing officer and mediator. And yes, we are parents too!

SAMS mission is to provide support to students and parents at the local school level to insure the general and special education rights of every child are fully protected and represented in a manner that will afford each child their inherent rights to a quality education.  SAMS is dedicated to establishing open communication between all parties in an effort to resolve disputes and conflicts that may interfere with the student’s rights to attend school and gain an education as provided by law. SAMS goal is to empower parents and guardians to become successful advocates for their children in a school setting.
