Have you ever wanted to experience big game hunting in the United States? Try participating in the wild grizzly hunts in Alaska. Alaska is the perfect breeding ground for grizzly bears because it is rich with blueberries and salmon. The best times for hunting grizzlies are in June, August, and September because during these months the hides of the bears are in their prime condition. The hides of grizzly bears vary in color from dark chocolate to silver to blonde. Typical sizes of the bears are between seven to nine feet tall and are best shot with rifles in the .30 caliber range. Be aware that often with these types of hunts, you will be shooting less than 200 yards away from the bear. Because the hunts usually involve walking three to six miles a day and carrying around daypacks, hunters should be in good physical condition. Before you plan your hunting trip be sure to consider the following points outlined below.

Packing List

When it comes to packing for a hunting trip you will want to pack light, but also in such a way that will well prepare you for unexpected weather and events. The proper clothing to pack includes polar fleece pants and shirts, regular socks and underwear, long polypro underwear, heavy wool socks, a high quality rain jacket or parka, a warm hat, wool or gore-tex gloves, rubber ankle fitting hip boots, and waterproof hunting boots. Be sure to bring a large waterproof dry bag (for transportation and storage) and a small bag (for soiled clothes). Don’t forget important accessories like sunglasses, shooting glasses, binoculars, cameras, and bear mace. Last but not least, remember to bring your personal hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, medicine, washcloth, and sanitary wipes.

Lodging

When it comes to lodging there are often many choices to choose from. Some grizzly hunts in Alaska are put together by people who run national parks or hunting charters. If you choose to join one of these hunts a main lodge or several small cabins may be provided for the hunters. The lodging accommodations of these permanent sites often include such benefits like access to hot showers, flush toilets, and electricity. Other hunting groups may offer you bomb shelter tents complete with cots, air mattresses, and a portable kitchen. Consider the type of lodging experience you are looking for ahead of time and plan accordingly.

Other Considerations
Besides planning your packing list and lodging, be sure to research local weather conditions to prepare. Look up flights and other necessary modes of transportation you will need in order to travel to your hunting site. Schedule reservations months ahead of time if you are planning on hunting with an official group. By properly panning your experience in advance you will no doubt enjoy the exciting grizzly hunts in Alaska.
