If your company EMR isn't at or near 0.60 there is a safety tool to help you get there and stay there. Most Construction Companies don't know their safety trend. Is safety improving, stagnant or is it backsliding? Is your Company's safety performance so good it has "maxed out"? There must be a mechanism in place to detect all of these conditions and most importantly to detect any backslide before you see it reflected in your company's incident rates, WC costs and EMR!
Over his 25+ years experience in Construction Safety Management, Bob Pope CHST with United Alliance Services Corp., has developed and copyrighted a Safety Tracking System (STS) designed specifically with Construction Companies in mind. This STS gives real-time data on at-risk behaviors & conditions and establishes a safety trend line. The STS is more economical than third party web-based tracking systems and software. The STS data input runs on Lotus 123 and Excel platforms which offer the end user a customized report that is easy to read and understand. It is a simple and effective platform and format for construction companies that subcontract or self-perform work.
There is an inherent benefit for any construction company having a safety check done from "outside the box" by a 3rd party non-partisan safety firm. With this STS you will see the safety performance for each project as well as the overall combined company safety performance real-time; week-to-week, month-to-month, whatever the reporting interval that is set up. For the STS to perform, a trend line must be established. It takes at least 3 data points to establish a trend line and this is typically done over a 6 week period. As your company's trend line improves the reporting interval is stretched out to monthly, then to quarterly and eventually semi-annually. The STS is designed so that over the life of the service it is minimized to just a low semi-annual/annual "check up" cost. The return on the investment (ROI) in this 3rd party service is realized in annual reductions in EMR, WC costs and incident rates. The STS is a good safety tool for CM's, GC's OCIP's and effective subcontractor safety management. Even an improvement from a good EMR of 0.75 to 0.65 yields a 14% reduction in annual WC premiums. There's no reason for your ROI not to easily exceed 100% of cost well within the next 3 year EMR cycle.
The STS is a deliverable with all jobsite safety services. The cost of this STS deliverable varies with the size of the company and number of ongoing projects. The most important thing to remember with this STS is that the more inputs (safety evaluations) per data point the more accurate and reliable the trend line and summary sheets are. It is recommended that you have at least 1 safety evaluation per ongoing projects per data point. The cost per safety evaluation w/comprehensive report & STS deliverable for most projects is $200 (est). Does your Company already employ a full-time safety professional? Then your company can purchase the STS to have and use throughout the life of the Company.
