Employers face a compliance deadline under OSHA's revised Hazard Communication (HazComm) Standard. OSHA has adopted the Global Harmonization System (GHS) for the classifying and labeling of chemicals. All employees must be trained on the OSHA HCS revisions by December 1, 2013.
The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) is aligning with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This revision to the OSHA HCS is intended to provide a unified system of classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets. The GHS improves the uniformity of hazard information in the workplace and provide easily understandable information on the handling and safe use of hazardous chemicals. Key changes include labeling requirements and the use of universal pictograms to readily identify hazards. MSDS's will be changed over to SDS's but essentially contain the same hazard information in a universal GHS format.
OSHA has provided information on this HCS transition at http://www.osha.gov/dsg/
