Measuring and evaluating jobsite safety performance
It can be difficult for construction companies to measure and evaluate jobsite safety performance. What is needed is a way to take physical observations, convert them into numerical data that can be tabulated to provide that measurement & evaluation.
United Alliance Services Corp. (UASC) can provide the way. With our proprietary Safety Tracking System (STS) construction companies in MA, CT, RI, NY, NYC & NJ can get that measurement & evaluation as a deliverable with all jobsite safety services.
The most important thing to consider with any data is the intended use of the data? In this STS, the specific intended use of the data is to establish a safety trend and measure it on an ongoing basis to better identify:
- The direction in which safety is trending
- The at-risk behaviors & conditions
- Where the next injury is likely to occur; and
- A prediction of imminence
In simplest terms, the intended use of the STS output data is to help establish future risk in order to better prevent injuries, minimize losses and lower the EMR & WC Premiums.
As with any measurement tool, the STS output data is only as reliable as the quantity & quality of input data. The amount of quality numerical data in each data point and the frequency of the data reporting shape the reliability of the STS output data.
Simple STS output data reliability comparison:
Company A services are for one jobsite safety evaluation a month on six jobsites. At the end of each cumulative month Company A will have one data point and a safety trend from 6 jobsite safety evaluations. Over three cumulative months Company A will have three data points and a safety trend from 18 jobsite safety evaluations.
Company B services are for one jobsite safety evaluation bi-weekly on six jobsites. At the end of each cumulative month Company B will have two data points and a safety trend from 12 jobsite safety evaluations. Over three cumulative months Company B will have six data points and a safety trend from 36 jobsite safety evaluations.
Company C services are for one jobsite safety evaluation a week on six jobsites. At the end of each cumulative month Company C will have four data points and a safety trend from 24 jobsite safety evaluations. Over three cumulative months Company C will have twelve data points and a safety trend from 72 jobsite safety evaluations.
At the end of the three months each Company will have one cumulative safety trend data point. Theoretically they could all be the same number, but Company C data will be most reliable and gives the best measurement & evaluation of jobsite safety performance because of the quantity of quality input data.
For reliability of the output data in first establishing the STS it is recommended that there is, at minimum, one jobsite safety evaluation per average ongoing jobsites (month-to-month). It takes three data points to establish a safety trend line. Once the safety trend line is established the service is re-evaluated and is typically tailed off over time as the improvement is observed in the data, eventually to just a semi-annual "check-up".
UASC also offers Annual Safety Compliance Program packages with the STS included as a deliverable.
